Buying paneer

Anyone know where I can find some unprepared paneer -- frozen or otherwise -- in Austin? I live near UT, and the Indian groceries are a bit out of the way. And it's easy enough to make, but it'd be great if I could just pick some up when I'm in a hurry.

Fiesta is normally pretty good about specialty items, but I couldn't find any, unless I just missed it. Any other ideas?

  1. Not the answer you're looking for, but I find queso blanco makes a great substitute and it can be found in pretty much any grocery store.

    1. re: verily

I had forgotten about queso blanco. Otherwise, it seems like Central Market it is. Thanks, everyone.

    2. Central Market usually has paneer...I remember the paneer being tucked away on the top shelf somewhere in the cheese section. There's also the Indian grocery called MGM on Burnet, near Anderson - they have paneer - I'm not sure if that'd be too out of the way for you, but it's certainly closer than the groceries further north.

      1. Definitely Central Market -- last time I bought some there, it was in the cheese section, and yes, on a top shelf somewhere (they move their stock around a little bit sometimes, but if you just ask, they'll hook you up).

I imagine Whole Foods carries it, too. It's spendy, though!

        1. Try the freezer at Fiesta.

          1. I was suprised to see that the freezer at Phoenicia grocery on Burnet Rd. has paneer. It also has some of the better/cheeper cheeses to be found in town. The French sheep's milk feta (not to mention six other kinds of feta), goat cheese and good oil cured olives are other reasons to check this place out.
