The Girl and the Fig (Sonoma) - Great Value, Mixed Feelings on the Food

  • 2

1) Given its location on Sonoma Square... its better than it needs to be given its ultra-tourist location... and we all know touristy restaurants tend to suck & get by (read Maya)

2) Its a Good Value... the great, comfortable Patio atmosphere, the endearing character of this down to earth, intimate eatery, local ingredients, wine list with inexpensive Wine Flights, the 3 Course prix-fixe dinners etc., all for similar prices as one of those stupid sub-urban diners like Cheesecake Factory or Claim Jumper makes Girl and the Fig a great value.

3) The food ranged from mediocre to very good... didn't match the praise received.

4) Service was good in a small town type of way.

Now for the important part....

> Complimentary bread was good, the caper berries & olives (luque & arbequinas) were extremely good.

> Following the namesake... we could resist starting with Fig & Arugula salads... with chevre, pecans, pancetta & a port vinaigrette... just the type of flavor combinations I love... except the figs were chewy, tasteless dried figs... the dressing (this "vinaigrette" was a creamy pinkish color) and/or pancetta (i couldn't tell which) had an odd, canned tuna flavor. This was the 2nd most disappointing dish of the evening.

> Oh yeah I had the White Wines flight... two French, two California (Viognier, Marsanne, Roussane & Viognier/Roussanne blend) where a good pour... but really just Vin Ordinaire

> I went with the petite Duck Confit (this was very good... significantly better than the version at Syrah, and really the perfect amount of food)

> Esposa went with the Scallops & Pork Belly... the Pork Belly was great.. the Scallops were underseasoned & toooo sweet... the kohlrabi puree & cabbage were very pedestrian.

> We had the Bellweather Farms San Andreas (a peccorino raw sheep milk style cheese)... so good!

> Pineapple Tartlett with Passion Fruit Puree & Blan Formagge Ice Cream... this was pretty bad... it had no flavor, seemed stale... about as bad as Starbucks pineapple empanada from last fall. The ice cream had nice texture... but really didn't taste like much more than sweet cream.

> Espresso... good, smokey not too acrid or bitter.

The whole meal with tip was less than $100.

Overall I think the cooking was not as good as what we have experienced at Monti's Rotisserie or Cafe St. Rose (for those who have been)... but its a nice experience, at a great value.. sitting smack in the middle of touristy corridor... so can't whine.

  1. That has been my experience at girl & the fig ... as well as the fig pantry over the years. There's some great stuff and there are duds. I tend to stay away from dishes that use ingrediants they sell in jars ... like the fig dressing. Yet I like the place. In some ways, time is starting to pass it by ... there are better and more interesting restaurants. But it is honest and usually quite good and pleasant.

Yeah... I wish we would have tried General's Daughter instead.
