Dinner Near Zabar's

  • 4

My wife and I will be changing trains in Manhattan on the Friday of Memorial Day Weekend. Planning to have dinner and then stop in to Zabar's for a few things (gotta satisfy my babka Jones). We'll have our rolling luggage with us, so don't want to be walking too far (or going anywhere that will balk at stashing our bags).

  1. Keep in mind that Zabar's closes around 7:00 or 8:00.

The best place nearby is probably Kefi -- very good, casual Greek food, on 79th between Bway and Amsterdam. (Cash only.) I'm not sure if they will have a place for your luggage, though -- it is very cramped. I guess it depends what time you are having dinner!

There aren't many places I can think of that will have a spot for the luggage -- NYC restaurants are not spacious. The biggest places I can think of are Artie's on Bway and 82nd (kosher-style deli, not terrible) or Dean's (decent square pizza) on 85th between Bway and Amsterdam. They might be your best bets taking the luggage more into consideration than the food.

    1. Mmm, Zabar's babka.... I love that stuff. It's going to be a nightmare to navigate the always packed store with rolling suitcases, though! Perhaps one of you could wait outside / at the Zabar's cafe with the suitcases while the other shops.

Zabar's closes at 7:30 on weeknights.

JMJD's Kefi suggestion is a really good one, food-wise. Be forewarned that in addition to being cash only, though, they also don't take reservations, which can be a pain. The wait is generally about half an hour at normal dinner hours.

Ouest (on b'way between 83rd and 84th) has beautifully prepared French food and very nice, unpretentious service.

I think if you call ahead, many restaurants could find a place to stow your luggage for you until you're finished eating.

      1. Thanks for the suggestions, and the info on the early closing--it really would have stunk to go to this effort and end up babka-less.

        1. Fairway Market is open late--will I be happy with babka from there?
