Thumbs up for Trellis
We went to Trellis for the first time to celebrate a very important birthday. The restaurant did not disappoint. First, they satisfied the requests I had made--quiet location (the restaurant is actually pretty good on the noise level, but they gave us a booth and that worked even better) and candle on the birthday boy's dessert of choice. The food was superb! It has been a while since I've gone to a contemporary northwest place, but this was as fine as it gets for the price. The salmon was delicious but the sides were really memorable! As many of you know, the chef grows much of his own produce. There were fresh garden peas lightly cooked with (presumably grown elsewhere, but maybe he has a greenhouse) gently sauteed champagne tomatoes and grapes with a touch of fresh mint. My companions were more than happy with their generous romaine salads with bleu cheese and nuts. The charred tomato soup was excellent. The seafood soup was yummy and large enough for two (the restaurant could really afford to cut the size as this is a dish that you really can't take home). Kudos also to the pastry chef for a really scrumptious lemon flan with sage. To me the sage was unnecessary and easily removable. The flan was light and the lemon flavor incredibly intense. Coffee was rich and smooth, without the heavy acidity that I dislike. The only criticism I have is that the price range in the wine list wasn't very large--it was all quite expensive.
Newspaper reviews have carped a bit about the service. Our waiter was great---just enough attention without being over the top. Made good recommendations. All in all, a lovely meal enjoyed by all. Highly recommended.
We had dinner at Trellis last Saturday and ordered off the specials menu. I went for the steak that came covered with a reduced strawberry sauce that was excellent. Someone in the kitchen spent a lot of time on that sauce. The dinner came with mashed potatoes in a little bucket. They were the best I can remember being served anywhere. We split a lemon flan for desert that was very tasty. Yes, we went overboard on the wine, but really enjoyed it. It is a cozy place and we made a couple of new friends at the next table.
