Best restaurant in Christchurch?

pikawicca Apr 26, 2008 06:07 AM

My daughter is finishing up her semester in Christchurch, and after months of eating way too many meat pies, I'd like to treat her to a fantastic meal before she comes home. It's been years since I was there, but I recall a great place located in an old house. What are your suggestions?

Loved the meal we had a The Bodhi Tree in Colombo Street. It's generally packed and not sure if they take bookings. It serves Burmese cuisine and you are meant to order a series of small plates to share. It was outstanding but not the cheapest meal I've ever had.

Hands down, THE best restaurant in ChCh is London Street (http://www.londonstreet.co.nz/) in Lyttelton. It's been written up in Cuisine NZ and compared to Alice Waters, one of America's (and the world's) most famous and inventive chefs. The food is fresh amd local and the wine is easily matched to the meal. And, it won't hurt your $$pocketbook$$!! A MUST GO!!!!!

Went to London Street last week. Food was fantastic. The Manuka honey glazed rib eye steak was really outstanding, the crust was coated w honey, the meat was tasty (best I have had in NZ). Service was very friendly. The wine they recommended was reasonable and excellent value for money. Definitely one of the best restaurant I have been in anywhere.

Sorry, but I have visited London Street in Lyttelton and it was not as good as the two above posts make it out to be. The food was okay at best and the service was sub par. When going to pay our group was over charged and when we explained how we were over charged the staff acted uninterested and then tried to pass it off as a tip. If you don't live in Lyttelton I would recommend going to a restaurant in town. Save yourself the petrol.

May not be flash enough for you but I had a fine meal in the Cornershop Bistro in Summer last year. Reinventing the classics and fine smoked fish.

Stupid name but GREAT restaurant ... "Cook 'N with Gas" ... on Worchester St. Great service, big portions, very fresh ingredients... I would definitely go there again.

Retour, Retour, Retour! http://www.retour.co.nz/ If you're really ready to splurge go for the
degoustation menu, but make sure you don't eat anything the day of, or you'll be struggling.

50 on the park at The George Hotel (http://www.thegeorge.com/restaurants.htm) is my favoured experience whilst commuting there 18 months ago. It is there less formal dining and I thought it was wonderful.

there are several christchurch threads on this board
