Chata a company out of Sinaloa has been showing up more and more often on the supermarket shelves of your local supermercado or mexitessen. I finally tried out their canned peruano refritos they call maycoba.

They are delicious!

Likely the best I have had out of a can. If you can find them - Check them out.

Can't you find dried mayocobas/peruanos locally? Here they are now almost as cheap as pintos and are often sold out of open stock bins (where children can play with them :-\).

I've seen the Chata brand more often recently, usually on >$4 16 oz. cans of cooked pork (carnitas or pibil?). Very wierd. No thank you.

At $1.80 that's some pricey convenience!
By coincidence I accidentally bought some Ducal brand refried Red beans from Guatemala at the same price.

I've gotten the Ducal refried black beans - really good. The canned peruanos I've found around here have mostly been Teasdale, and pretty cheap. I have not seen anything bearing the Chata brand, though. This is in LA County.

Chata just seems to be starting their distribution locally. Check one of the big four Latino oriented chains (Gigante, Big Saver, Northgate, Vallarta) in your area. I'm pretty sure that the Valu Plus chain has them now also.

BTW Chata appears to be a brand of Novamex, a subsidiary of another large Mexican corporation. http://www.novamex.com/ .

I thought I've heard 'chata' used as a Spanish slang word, but I could be wrong...

It's used to refer to someone who has a flat nose.
