new restaurant for Shawn McClain?
Am I the only one who finds McClain overrated?
Mr. CG and I tried Spring -- once -- for an anniversary I think. We thought the bar might be good for a return, but not the restaurant. Then we tried Green Zebra once with vegetarian relatives. But while there was nothing "wrong" with anything we ate at either restaurant, nothing was memorable. I can easily think of six restaurants in a similar price category that wow us (e.g. Blackbird, Naha). Not these. Haven't tried Custom House b/c steak isn't a draw and neither is McClain for us.
Is there something we're missing or do others find this "empire" a yawn?
I like his places. I ate at Custom House a couple of weeks ago and I thought it was excellent. BTW it isn't a steakhouse; it's a contemporary American restaurant that has an emphasis on meats of all kinds but where you can also get lots of seafood and vegetable dishes. Their sweetbreads appetizer was great and so was the braised bone-in short rib of beef.
I ate at Green Zebra tonight and thought it was quite possibly the best food I've had in my life. The combination of flavors and their balance was positively breathtaking. The menu is innovative at all levels, from a fresh (not canned) Hawaiian heart of palm salad to the pink peppercorn thyme soda on the beverage list.
But some people are not into that kind of thing, and that's fine too.
I don't have much of an appreciation for fine beers. They all taste like bread water or some such thing to me, even though I can tell that some are quite different from others.
