Mexican market - lower Weschester?

Hi all,

I'm cooking for my supper club for Cinco de Mayo. Where can I buy authentic ingredients. Hand made tortillas, Mexican spices, good chilis/peppers, etc?

Was thinking White Plains but have no idea where specifically.

Thanks!

  1. How far are you from New Rochelle? I saw some great Mexican markets there, but would have to check w/ a friend about the names.

I am close by. If you can check that would be great. BTW, I went to La Herradura in New Rochelle one night for Mexican food. It was pretty good! (Just in case you are in that area & looking)

Viva Ranch, next to Payless on Main St. - but she says no fresh tortillas there - but may be one of the restaurants would sell you some. She also recommends Viva Grande, but isn't sure of the location. I bought a huge selection of peppers at one of the markets on Main Street, and they have chorizo, as well.

Just drove by Viva Grande today. It's on the corner of Huguenot and Centre St. Your best bet for fresh tortillas would probably be Tortilleria (167 Westchester Ave, in Port Chester.)

yup. if you want fresh tortillas, go to tortilleria los gemelos that Pat mentions. Then, around the corner on main (heading east) you'll see a mexican market where you can get anything else you could hope for.

Hi Adam, the OP is looking for hand made tortillas which Tortilleria does not do - very good but all machine pressed. Didn't you post about a hand made tortilla you had at Herradura or one of the NR places? If so, maybe they will sell them...

              1. re: laylag

True. herradura makes hand made tortillas, but they don't sell them. I don't know any place any where in the country that sells retail hand made tortillas on their own... there's no way to produce them fast enough... so los gemelos will be the best bet. And if you get their packaged ones, I have to say it's light years better than the mission crap you get in the supermarket.

Any good Mexican restaurant should be more than happy to sell you tortillas if you give them a little notice.
