New MyChow

Trying to figure out the advantage of the new MyChow page which now includes threads going much further back in a user's history. However, if someone replies to a thread that has already scrolled to page 2 on MyChow, it doesn't float back up to the top. Any way to make that happen?

    1. When looking at e.g. Melanie Wong's Recent Posts, I'd want the topics sorted in reverse chronological order by the date of that person's most recent post. I think that's what it's doing.

However, when looking at My Recent Posts, it would be more useful to have it sort in reverse chronological order by the date of the latest post by any user.

I agree - I'd rather see all the "new replies" to threads that I've posted on, regardless of how old they are.

            1. re: MMRuth

MyChow should have both options... the ability to sort the most recent replies, as well as the start date. But I've had Melanie's question too... why don't older posts that have been recently updated show up as such in MyChow?

                1. re: adamclyde

It looks to me like Recent Posts is sorted by the date of the last post by the user in question.

In other words, when I reply to a month-old topic, it goes to the top of my Recent Posts list, but if someone else replies, there's no change to my list (though the topic will go to the top of *their* list).

                    1. re: Robert Lauriston

I don't believe that's the case -- I can find instances of posts where my last reply was on February 22nd showing up higher on my list than posts where my last reply was on March 10th.

I believe that's what happening is that your entire list of posts is sorted by date started, and the pagination is based on that. So, your first page of posts is approximately the 70 most recently started threads. But then, within that page, the posts are being sorted by most recent reply. so new replies to old things are floating to the top of a given page, but not to the top of the first page.

                        1. re: Jacquilynne

I think you're right about date started being the main sort criterion. The bottom of my list is mostly Site Talk posts about the makeover, which is to say, the first topics created on the post-makeover site.

The pages are sorted by most recent post. The New flags seem to be dotted randomly through the list.

How they're paginated is unclear since the date ranges overlap. My first page runs from 6 minutes ago back to April 19; second page goes from April 23 back to April 8; the third page is 18 hours ago back to April 2.

                            1. re: Robert Lauriston

What is happening is once a post drops off the first page of "My Chow", (drops to #71) it never comes back to the first page regardless of when a new reply is added.
When it drops off the second page (#141) it will not come back to the second or first pages. And so on.
That's why you will see the "new" flag and recent dates scattered throughout the pages.
Edit: Right now I only have 25 posts showing on "My Chow" first page (10 days) and can't access any other page to see the count there. So maybe it is 71 posts OR 10 days for the first page.

The number of posts on the first page was reduced (since the original post) when all the server problems cropped up, presumably to lessen the burden on the site.

Me, too, especially since searching with "user:JoanN" does me practically no good at all. Since the search isn't case sensitive, and using quotation marks to limit the search doesn't work, searching on my user name turns up every Joann and Joanne on the boards.

                          • Thanks for the feedback -- it is strange. I'll run it by Engineering and see if we can't get that changed.

Jacquilynne, before the roll-out of the current version of MyChow, the standard answer to why it was limited to only 72 threads was that the database required would be too hard on the site. http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/455024#3076048

It seems that the server problems started shortly after this change in MyChow, http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/516268 . Since that time we've had temporary fixes, however, not everything working well at once. Straightening out the message boards seems to put the MyChow application out of whack, and vice versa. Is there any hope that they can both function properly at the same time or do we have to choose one functionality over the other?

                                  1. re: Melanie Wong

The mychow changes were a response to server problems, they didn't cause them.

                                      1. re: Jacquilynne

Expanding MyChow from only one page with 72 threads per user to a dynamic database with every thread posted to since the site launch (173 pages in my case) lessened the server load?

                                          1. re: Melanie Wong

Ah, sorry, I misunderstood what you meant. The pagination came first, and then we gradually decreased the number of posts per page in response to the server demands. I'm fairly certain the pagination itself wasn't the cause of the problems, though.

                                              1. re: Jacquilynne

The other thing i've noticed is that today when I click on "My Chow" at the top of each page, it shows the url as

                                                http://www.chow.com/profile/10039

It has bobbled back and forth since the switchover from www.chow.com to chowhound.chow.com and vice versa. The subsequent pages show as chowhound.com only. Just thought I'd mention it, don't know if it means anything.

yes, to be simple, all I want is to have any thread I started or posted in, when it gets a new post from anyone, to shift all the way to the first few pages. i find myself hitting next/next/next and seeing many many "NEW" threads. they should be lumped to the very top.
