Driving from Norfolk to Edenton on I-17

My buddy and I are taking a road trip from Philadelphia to Edenton, NC for a wedding. We are driving down I-13 until we get to VA and then we pick up 464 to I-17. I was wondering if there were any cool places to stop at on the way down. We plan on stopping at Doumar's since they invented the ice cream cone, but are there any other restaurants/diners/hole-in-the-wall type places we should check out. We are both very adventurous eaters. Thank you very much.

  1. a few places along that route:

    Doumars also has great cheeseburgers and limeade in addition to inventing the ice cream cone

    In Elizabeth City:
    Cypress Creek Grill 113 S Water St 252 334 9915 chef from corpus christi; gulf coast seafood here ; creek style crabcakes; beef brisket on thur

    In Hertford (between Elizabeth City and Edenton)
    Frankie's Hertford Café been around since b4 WWII; great pies; fried seafood

    Captain Bob's Seafood Hwy 17 good bkfst; bbq and fried seafood;

    In Edenton:
    Chero's Mkt Café 112 W Water St 252 482 5525 pistachio chicken salad sandwich

      I need to find a good place for a long lunch this weekend between Virginia Beach & the Triangle. Are Edenton & Elizabeth City my best bets? Chero's gets high marks but it sounds pretty pedestrian to me. Fresh local fish and decent wine would be ideal. Also would be very interested in learning about the seasonal places mentioned above (esp if they are in season now).
