Dinner in Englewood, NJ

I am going to a see a show at the BergenPAC in Englewood the weekend after next and was hoping to find somewhere really close by to go have dinner beforehand. It is a bit of a special event, so I am looking for something above the level of hole in the wall, but it doesn’t have to be anything too fancy. I don’t know the area at all and I haven’t been able to find much by searching. Is Baumgart`s worth considering? I tend to not go for Italian. I have been to the Minado in nearby Little Ferry, and at the moment that is my fall back. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  1. Donn Pomodoro is a good restaurant to try. Very close by and Italian food.
    Let me know...

    1. Sorry, did not read enough to know that you do not want Italian food.

      1. In my opinion, Baumgarts is not worth considering.

I would suggest Veggie Heaven in Teaneck on Cedar Lane Rd. It's a very good vegetarian restaurant that cooks mostly Chinese dishes with a lot of flavor and innovation--but with healthier ingredients. My husband (who is a big meat lover/eater) loves this restaurant. They also have veggie sushi, and fantastic desserts. It is not fancy, but it is certainly not a hole in the wall. We order a lot of food when we go there, and we never spend more than $50 for the two of us.

I love Minado, but for a more special dinner occassion, I don't think it is a good fit.

I'm sure there will be more people with suggestions for Tenafly or other areas over there. I'm a lot less familiar, and the few places that I've tried over that way are mediocre at best.

        1. Go to Tapas de Espana on Dean Street...its great!

I will second Tapas de Espana on Dean Street. Just be sure to make reservations. And, you can walk to Bergen PAC from there, so you can get a good parking spot early and not have to move the car. There is a Japanese restaurant right next to Tapas, which is also excellent, but I do not remember the name of it.

          2. The japanese restaurant next to Tapas de Espana is Daruma. It's very good. My recommendation, though, is Saigon Republic on Palisades Ave. It's very small so reservations are essential.

I forgot about Daruma. I second that suggestion. Excellent sushi and sashimi. Make a reservation--this is a small place and very popular. Plus, you can request a tatami-style table--which reminds me of a place I used to go to with my parents when I was a kid (and they loved it because it reminded them of their lives in Japan).

FYI, went to Saigon Republic before a show last nt. We love vietnamese. This was horrible. Like fast food. The waiter told us the old Vietnamese woman was no longer there, they now don't have certain things on the menu, and there's a mexican chef who's good. The flavors were not the same as in a authentic vietnamese restaurant.
We sent our food back, the grilled chicken in the bun was old , cold and tasted horrible.
The noodle soup with shrimp dumplings that I order at every vietnamese place was like out of a can or something. It was absolutely horrible, but the american waiter was nice and took everything off the bill but the soup which we 'sorta' ate.

              2. 3 words: Tapas de Espana

                1. I have little knowledge of the area, but I recently ate at Ruthie Maes in Englewood: http://www.ruthiemaes.com/
I liked it. It isn't really "special occasion" place per se, but it can work if you are in the mood for southern food, at least it is something different than the old standby cuisines.

sad news. Ruthie Mae's in Englewood has been closed for months and months now. I liked it too.

Ruthie Mae's closed in May of 2008......does anyone know if the owner relocated, or is asscoiated with another restaurant?

                  2. Typhoon is another pretty decent place that closed. Maybe someone can provide the month and year.
