Great meal at River Cafe

I had heard that this restaurant was way past its prime, but was very pleasantly surprised to have a superb 6 course tastings menu there tonight. Of course the ambience and view are wonderful, but I was expecting to have an experience similar to "Tavern on the Green" since it is reputed to be more of a tourist destination nowadays. However, I ended up having one of the best meals I have had in a long while. Still a special occasion restaurant since prices are high, but definitely worth a visit.

I (obviously, to anyone who reads this board) fully agree. It's clearly not what it was but, since that was an extremely high bar (top ten NYC at one point), this does not mean that it's not a very good, way above average place to dine for a special occasion. This is not mediocre food and I'd put it up against ANY Brooklyn place serving similar fare (that leaves out al di la and Difara's :-) ) in quality of the food. Of course, at these prices it better be at least as good as Saul and other quality places AND have other things going for it as well. And it does.
