Suggestions on where to eat within walking distance? One of my companions disdains any sort of heavy food, so I know El Portal is out. I've got my fingers crossed on Tarantino's. Anywhere else?

I like Sushi of Naples (735 East Green Street, Pasadena, CA 91101 (626) 578-1123). They have really good sushi. They have fish specials every night and if you are lucky, they have this excellent miso-glazed sea bass. My husband likes their bento boxes a lot. The price is right too. I believe this is only a few blocks away from the playhouse.

A wonderful little place I enjoy is Maison Akira. Its on Green St., about a block east of the playhouse. A French/Japanese cuisine. Could be a bit pricey, but I think you could find something to please both of you.

One of the best beef dishes we have had was served at Maison Akira. I forgot the name of it, but it was a platter for 2 so my wife and I shared it and we both loved it. It is served on a platter and they come to the table to cut the meat and plate it. We have had other dishes there as well, which were good, but the beef was awesome.

Cayo Restaurant is right next door to the Playhouse and isn't too heavy (calls itself "Contemporary American" - a lightweight take on California Cuisine though not overly imaginative). Nearby is Bistro 45 (about 4 blocks east, at 45 S Mentor)- a much better example of the same type of food, though I'd advise reservations for pre-theater and allow at least an hour.

Thanks, everyone. We wound up going to Sushi of Naples and it was quite good and a real bargain moneywise. Hope to try Maison Akira when we can have a more leisurely dinner.

And yes, Caya closed some time ago, but a new restaurant is opening in that spot in mid-August, the Playhouse folks told us.

By the way, if anyone wants to see a great play before it closes on August 11, hurry to see "The Waverly Gallery" at the Pasadena Playhouse, a Pulitzer Prize nominee. It's a sobering view of a woman suffering from Alzheimer's written by the fellow who wrote the wonderful movie "You Can Count On Me." The acting in the play is really superb.
