[OKC] Oklahoma City Vietnamese [OKC]
Shortly after I posted I travelled to OKC from Dallas. I am not sure what is going on at Bahn Mi Ba Le but those sandwiches are two of the worst renditions of Bahn Mi I have had. I am not sure what the dayglow red syrupy sauce was on the Thit Nuong (BBQed Pork) but we don't have that in the local Dallas eateries and there are quite a few. The only thing that was great was the spring roll. The Bahn Mi in Dallas is on a more crusty version of the same bread, barbecued pork (that has been marinated) usually cooked over a flame and it comes served with a small slap of mayo on the breaad, julienned carrots, julienned cucumber (both the carrot and cucumber have been lightly marinated in rice wine vinegar and sugar), sliced fresh jalapenos (not deseeded), cilantro and sometimes cabbage. There is no gloppy sauce on it at all. I did not care for the Bun at Lido either. I really wanted to like it but OKC Vietnamese will not be on my rotation next time I am in town. Thank you all for you comments and feedback. If you are ever in Dallas and would like some recs just post up and let us know what part of town you will be in!!! Dallas is very large and has 3 or 4 Vietnamese concentrated areas.
I ate at Lido last month, after a prolonged absence and was disappointed. Portion sizes seem to have increased, and that's not always a good sign. Had BBQ pork ribs-too dry. Mom had fish and said it was nothing special. Rice is usually overcooked and gummy.
On flip side, I concur with Grand House recommendation. We have never had a bad meal there. They have dim sum on the weekends. They also have a full bar with a delicious lychee martini.
Lido is pretty good. I prefer Chinese food to Vietnamese food but most Chinese restaurants in OKC are run by Vietnamese. Lido is across the street from a large, nice Asian grocery store. Bahn Mi Ba Le is a tiny carry-out French Vietnamese style sandwich shop across Classen Blvd. from Lido. There are numerous Asian restaurants in this area which is actually known by locals as Little Saigon. A good Chinese/Vietnamese restaurant about a block north on Classen is Grand House which has live fish, crabs, and lobsters in tanks. Grand House is a nice place, yet casual. There are other Vietnamese Pho places and Thai restaurants in the area.
