My husband and I had a great dinner at Mirabelle this weekend. It is in our ‘hood so we go there from time to time but hadn’t had a full meal in a while. It was a great experience and it is good to know that this place is still doing things well. While we were there we found out that one of the former chefs has recently returned – from the perspective of our dinner this was a good thing.
For starters, we had the house made pate and the endive salad. The pate is served for sharing – in two small ramekins with two other dishes of crisped baguette. The flavour was excellent – almost foie gras like – and it was very rich. It wasn’t quite a pate in texture though, more like a mousse. The endive salad was a great success – individual pieces of small endive leaves, not chopped, with almonds, goat cheese, and a well balanced balsamic based dressing. It was nice and light with a tangy flavour. It also went beautifully with the Pouilly Fuisse we had ordered.
For mains, we both had the halibut special which was served with roasted red potatoes, asparagus and a zesty beurre blanc. The halibut was perfectly cooked – still moist but came away from the skin in individual ‘leaves’. The potatoes – which I normally find very boring in a restaurant meal had been roasted in a variety of herbs and were nice and crispy and very flavourful and made me remember that even simple things can add a wonderful element to a dish. The first of the season’s asparagus was a great accompaniment and the beurre blanc sauce tied everything together without making it too heavy.
Service was cheerful and very attentive. We will definitely be back (especially now that they have their patio open!).
