Glad to hear they are good at Waterfront. I've always been curious but somehow am never able to stray from the burger or pulled pork, except for the few specials I have ordered. I'll have to get them one of these days.

Try Telephone Bar on 2nd Ave bet 9th and 10th St.-- it comes in newspaper; or Mr. Dennehy's on Carmine St. and 7th Ave. (delicious); or Westville 10th St and Bleecker-- greats chips!

yes, i'm glad someone mentioned mr. denney's. they have excellent f 'n' cs. good, crisp, light batter.

despite the clever name, a salt and battery is in my experience generally bad (soggy everything... tho i haven't encountered the surly service, thank goodness).

I must respectfully disagree. Perhaps I was there on a bad day, but having heard about this place for years I was sorely disappointed. This was a take out order phoned in; now, I know fish and chips doesnt travel all that well (it's not the kind of place you'd want to eat in anyway), but we were only going a couple of blocks, and when we opened it up there was more batter stuck to the paper than there was to the fish. Large pollock was nowhere near the size of a large order back 'ome. Chips soft and soggy. To top it off it said in the menu 10% off for cash, but when we got there we were told we needed to tell them over the phone we were paying cash. Gimme a break; they couldnt void the check and start over?? Well at least the surly service was authentic :-( The local diner does it better, IMHO.
