Me and my lady friend are taking a roadtrip to the Lewes DE for a few days and then on to DC, before heading back to CT. Can anyone suggest anything in this area or along Rt 13 that would be worth checking out? Seafood, hot dog stands of note...perhaps a regional favorite or two.
Thanks

  1. You can't go wrong at the Stoney Lonen, Second Street, Rehoboth (about 10 minutes from Lewes) http://www.stoneylonen.com/summer.html - Great place for fish and chips, clams, mussels, oysters and crab cakes. Atmosphere is casual/friendly. Walk on the boardwalk for a while, hit Candy Kitchen or Dolles for some saltwater taffy, sit on a bench facing the ocean while sipping a birch beer, walk the boardwalk some more and work up an apettite-- then head back up towards Lewes. When you get to Rt 24, make a left at the McDonalds and go down to Peddlers Villiage. Visit the General Store and try a milkshake or hand dipped ice cream.

    1. Helen's Sausage House on Route 13 in Smyrna has a cult following. They are known for their sausage sandwiches.

Sambo's Tavern is another place you might try. It's off Route 13 in Leipsic. They have hardshell crabs, great crab cakes and great crab soup. This place also has a cult following - a lot of the NASCAR drivers go there when they are in Dover for the races.

In Lewes itself, Surf Bagel on Route 1 has great bagels and bagel sandwiches. I love the Islander - tuna salad, pineapple, and three cheeses.

There is also DiBonaventure's bakery on King's Highway. If you're going to the beach and packing a picnic, pick up some of their foccacia.

      1. If you are in Lewes on Sunday try the Brunch at the Buttery. Excellent food.

        1. Yes, you must do Helen's Sausage House if you are heading up Rt 1 N. Great homemade sausage, open breakfast & lunch, & fabulous Elvis room.
