Looking for a delicious spicy tuna bowl...
I've been searching far and wide for the most satisfying tuna bowl! My favorite so far is, if you'd believe it, Asa-ya on Culver/Braddock. I'm a sucker for the mayonnaise-y goodness...but they're closed on Sundays, so I need an option #2. Any suggestions? A reasonable drive from West LA would be a plus...
thanks!

Fire tuna bowl at Joymart in Little Tokyo was interesting and good. Only avail during lunch I believe.
Love me the Asa-ya BTW. One of the better bang for the buck to-go Japanese joints around the Westside IMO. I've eaten there for years, even when they were called Masa-ya by the previous owner.

One of the best tuna bowls is in Little Tokyo called T.O.T. I don't know what TOT stands for but it's on 2nd Street in Little Tokyo Plaza. The bowl has a scoop of spicy tuna, some slices of tuna sashimi, a salad of greens and a scoop of rice. All for about $9.

When I worked at UCLA in 2005 I used to get a nice spicy tuna bowl for lunch at the little sushi restaurant on Westwood between Kinross and Lindbrook. I can't remember the name, but its on the west side of the street, just south of the Rite Aid at the corner of Kinross and Westwood. It's up a little half-flight of steps.
Nice folks work there. You can get sushi in a combo or ala carte, and they have a lunch special spicy tuna bowl. I liked sitting at the counter overlooking the street, and watching the sights as I ate.

Other than a sushi bar, I think Bristol Farms (specifically the Westlake Village store, but they are probably all pretty good) does a good job with their spicy tuna bowl. You can choose from two: one with rice and one for carb watchers (with lettuce and no rice). BUT, there is a trick: try to purchase and eat this bowl BEFORE the rice has had a chance to cool. This means that you will want to arrive at the store while they are making them in the morning and have it for lunch (don't refrigerate), or ask them if they will make you a fresh one -- providing they still have warm rice available at the time of your special request...some stores are more accommodating than others.
To my tastes, Bristol Farm sushi is next best to going to a good sushi bar, and even superior to many.
Also, ask for a heavy sprinkle of sesame seeds...and they will also give you extra mayo -- should you desire -- although I much prefer chili oil for that extra kick!›1 Reply
