Clam Box Vs. Woodman's?
One day late April to do fried clams. In town after a long absence. Clam Box or Woodmans? Talk amongst yourselves...

I am O.F.D.!!-- moved from the area about 19 years ago. It has been years since I went to clam box--I will try and get there soon. Last summer my husband took me out for a whale watch in Ipswitch and on the way home we went to Woodmans. I thought the clams were super!!
If you are ever in Newburyport go to Michaels---not huge portions, however good clams. -
Heretic that I am, I prefer clam strips to whole. For these, I'd say that those at the Clam Box are the most tender and fresh, and the frequent oil changing makes a huge difference. Farnam's were smaller, fried a bit darker, and in a different way, just as good. Main impression of Woodman's was the overwhelming greasiness. If I had a magic lamp, one of my wishes would be that clam shacks try using gram flour (aka besan, made from chickpeas) in their dredging mix. The onion bhaji I've had at Indian restaurants raise onion strings to a whole new level, and I think gram-coated clams would be spectacular.

If you'd like to have a terrible meal at an outrageous price, definitely go to Woodman's.
I've never been to Farnham's, so it would be Clam Box by default, and they're very good.

Woodmans would be my last choice among Clam Box, Farnhams, and Woodmans (despite not having been to Farnhams yet!). Woodmans has smaller and more expensive portions, particularly at this time of the year, and heavier breading than Clam Box -- IMO. Why my animus? Didn't like the way the old guy behind the counter looked at me when I noticed their prices (were quite high).

Clam Box definitely, with J.T. Farnham's next in line. I compared the latter's fried clams to Woodman's back a while ago at:
