Pizza Help Please ... (Scottsdale AZ)

Thank you all for your help re Chinese recs in Phx. I am a SF Bay Area hound in Scottsdale for a couple of more weeks. Would love to get a good carryout/delivery Pizza recommendation somewhere nearby (staying at Acoma & Scottsdale Road). No preference for thin/thick crust, just good crust, fresh ingredients. I tried one place last trip on Scottsdale Rd near Shea (NY Pizza????) but was not particularly impressed. Many thanks ....

  1. NYPD Pizza, bleh. I was there last weekend, and it reaffirmed my dislike of their pizza. For good NY style, I always hit Ray's in that neighborhood. Just a quick drive over to 101 / FLW.

    1. That's <2 minutes from me. Delivery is poor here. You want takeout.

Consider Picazzos at Frank Lloyd Wright & Scottsdale Rd (drive n on scottsdale rd, turn r onto FLW blvd, make your first right). Fresh ingredients, decent crust, picazzos.com.

The nearest takeout to you is 'Sauce' (shopping plaza on the west side of scottsdale rd, just south of Acoma) but I don't recommend them. Cheap, uninspired, simple northern Italy style.

Agreed, NYPD fails to impress. You weren't far from goodness, however. If you face NYPD's entrance and turn 120 degrees you will see Oreganos, a more flavorful option and my personal choice. The familiar option is California Pizza Kitchen, west side of Scottsdale Rd 1/2 block south of Shea.

Welcome back, bon appetito. Twitter #phx (or me, @mahoski) for the rapid response team.

I really like Oreganos thin crust pizzas. A bit more of a drive would be Humble Pie at Scottsdale and Rose. More of a specialty pizza place and not the huge ones you get at Oreganos, but pretty good.
For good, basic pizza near you, I'd go with Oreganos.

      2. I'd suggest Redendo's. I've been only to the Fountain Hilsl location but was impressed with what I had there. I think the Scottsdale location has the same owner and menu.

          2. Try Guido's on Scottsdale and Shea. I haven't actually tried their pizza, but they pasta and broasted chicken are great.

            1. Try Grazie's - VERY GOOD (Main/Goldwater - Just East of the Valley Ho)
Famous Ray's Pizza - AWESOME (Frank Lloyd Wright/101)
Pizza Picasso - VERY GOOD (there is one off Gainey/Scottsdale)
Orengano's - One in Old Town and Shea/Scottsdale

              The above are my favorites!

The whole pies are very good and more consistent than the slices, in my experience.

                2. re: amy30

Grazie's is great, but do they do carry-out?

                  1. re: ajs228

Yes. (Grazie does carry-out, at least, they did a while ago).

                3. I'll second/third Humble Pie, Oregano's, and Picazzo's.

I'd also recommend Nello's (Shea blvd.), which has been a favorite in the area for some time. Good thick crust pizzas with some unique, delicious toppings, and great sauce.

If you feel like taking a longer drive, there's multiple other fantastic Phoenix area favorites (Pizzeria Bianco, La Grande Orange, etc.).

Bianco does not do carryout. Best pizza in Phoenix area is chain of Grimaldi's but I highly recommend dining in instead of to-go order.

                    1. re: crsin

Humble Pie is great, but the pizza doesn't hold up well if it's going for a long drive in the car. From the 10 minutes it took from the kitchen to my work it became slightly (oh so slightly) soggy. Oregano's makes a decent pizza, but it's not anything "special", still, a decent pizza. Nello's is in the same situation for me. Good pizza, but doesn't go the extra mile.

Like zack said, Bianco doesn't do carryout--and the distance it would travel would lose so much of the flavor and crispness.

I disliked Grimaldi's when I went. Tried both w/ red and white sauces, found it to be mediocre. Given the choices between Papa Johns or Grimaldi's to satisfy pizza cravings--Papa John's wins.

                    2. I've not tried their pizza yet, due to their other unique offerings, but Andreoli's is a little Italian grocer/deli near the 101/Via Linda that is worth a visit. Just about everything is homemade, from the breads to cheeses to sausages.

It must be noted that this is not traditional pizza - it has a thick, doughy crust and it's baked in advance and then heated to-order.

                      2. Oregano's is the best Pizza in Scottsdale. The restaurant has a very fun atmosphere and the staff is always great, very young and knowledgable, great service. The pizzas are delicious as well as large portions. Salads and appetizers are good as well, they have a guacamole app. which is delicious and you have to try the Pablo Picasso salad, its the best. Give Oregano's a try, Shea and Scottsdale Rd., you won't be dissapointed. Often times there is a wait for a table but it is well worth the wait, I recommend sitting outside rather than inside when the weather is nice, the outside tables tend to feel more private.

                        1. We live in the same neighborhood. Gabio's is our regular take-out/delivery spot now. It's in the same strip mall as Safeway and Blockbuster at 64th Street and Greenway (it has been at least 4 different pizza places over the past few years, but it seems the new owners finally have it right). Great thin and crispy pizza - they do NY-style as well, but we prefer the thin. It really is a great alternative, when you don't want to drive into Old Town to Grazie.

                          1. A few minutes drive away is Slice's in the middle of Desert Ridge Marketplace. Great thin crust pizza with a wide selection. While you're there, it's a good place just to walk around and maybe do some shopping.
