Freiburg-the basics, the necessities

Hi going to be doing an intensive language study in freiburg over the summer. I was wondering if anyone had a few tips on good cafes, bakeries, beer gartens (although apparently wine is the thing there, so wine bars as well of course), and regular restaurants...i hear there is a nice farmer's market on the weekend...any help would be appreciated!!

  1. All I can tell you is that there is beer everywhere in Germany, including the wine regions. I studied in Italy, where there is wine everywhere, including the beer regions! Lucky you. Freiburg is supposed to be a lovely place - I have friends in Basel near there. We are not allowed to post on non-food things on this board, so please visit Lonely Planet/Thorn Tree to tell us about the language course. Of course I'll post all foodie stuff I think of here - Freiburg indeed is known for its farmers' market around the cathedral and for good food in general - that is a tri-country area with southwestern Germany, northeastern France, and Switzerland. Lots of students; very lively.
