Annual Jazz Fest trip is coming up next week. Do any of you know of a must-stop-at home cookin' type of place we could visit on the Dallas-Shreveport-Baton Rouge-New Orleans route? We found a funky pink diner last year and would like to add another place to our memories. Thanks.

On the way down or coming back from New Orleans, stop off in Natchitoches, LA-it is a beautiful town-the oldest settlement in Louisiana, also it it the picturesque small town where "Steel Magnolias" was filmed. In the downtown historic district, overlooking the Cane River, there is an amazing Creole/Cajun place called "The Landing"-it is a must stop-lovely decor and atmosphere, brilliant food.

Stop in my home town of Marshall, Texas and eat at Neely's Brown Pig. The restaurant has been in business for around 70 or 80 years. Order a Brown Pig. It's a pulled pork type BBQ sandwich with some sauce. A local specialty that is quite good. French fries are pretty good too. And the only restaurant in town where you can get a big glass of buttermilk. And they serve it in a frosted glass. Nothing better than a two Brown Pigs, an order of fries, and a large buttermilk for lunch!! (I'm getting hungry just thinking about it.)

A second choice here in Marshall is the P & J Lunchroom. It's a small five table, family run lunchroom that is only open for lunch Monday - Friday. Very, very good home cooking/soul food. Meat and two vegtables for $6 or 7. Owner Jacky Franklin cooks it all fresh everyday. I eat there about three days a week. Tell him I sent you.
