Picnic Shopping in Waynesville, NC
Hi
Will be in Waynesville this weekend, and I'm looking for picnic fixings...maybe some good bread, olives, cheese, prepared sandwiches, etc. Is there a specialty store or "gourmet" market that would fit the bill...hopefully something other than Ingles?
Thanks!

Loved it! Have stayed there 3 or 4 times, and its probably my favorite B&B/Inn in the mountains. The food is great too. We split a perfectly cooked filet one night for dinner, also had a fried green tomato appetizer that was good, but not great. The breakfasts are wonderful...you can pick whatever you want...eggs, panckes, fruit, grits, hashbrowns, juice, etc.

yes, we were there in the summer and it was lovely to sit on the front porch in a rocker and drink an ice cold beer and imagine yourself back in another era....though I guess I wouldn't have been drinking a Highland Gaelic Ale!! Breakfast and Dinner there was very good. I just complained about the rolls/bread at dinner and got a very nice e-mail from the owner,.

Thanks so much to everyone for the replies. Sounds like we'll definitely be able to find something that works.
Leah - maybe I'm being too much of a snob in regard to ingles...LOL. I sort of had them pegged a s Food Lion-type store, but it sounds like they are much higher quality. I totally trust your trust your judgement!

Ingles very much responds to demographics but in Waynesville they have a very large newer store that has put in or is about to put in a Starbucks...I would think they have a very large wine selection along w/ chilled wines...organic fruits and vegetables, precut stuff...rotisserie chicken, sushi...I would certainly stop there first.

Oh my god - I did not know that! Waynesville is my hometown and I am actually going there this weekend! Thank you so much for the info. I can't wait to see the renaissance of the Waynesvegas Ingles. Leah, have a good time in Raleigh this weekend (where I live now) -- I responded to your post about where to eat this weekend in Raleigh.
Panacea is quite yummy and Apple Crate, I think, is in Walnut Village where the ABC store is (yes, that is a landmark), and don't forget to get sweets (or other sandwiches) from Whitman's Bakery on Main St.

I'm not sure why you don't want to go to the large Ingles in Waynesville w/ a Starbucks...they carry Sunburst trout products, gourmet cheeses, olives, Applegate farms organic lunch meat, Dietz and Watson, Annie's Naturally bread out of Sylva and also some good rolls you can buy individually....If you want prepared sandwiches than try the others but...

The Apple Crate Cafe would be perfect. We usually make our own picnic food, but if I was going to order to go, that would be my first choice. We used to like the Patio, but the Apple Crate is better and much more reasonably priced. As far as cheese and olives, I'm afraid Ingles would be your best choice. The kitchen shop in Main Street has some jarred gourmet type items that might also be good. Have fun!

For prepared sandwiches Panacea Coffee House is downtown, a few blocks off of the main drag. They make some really good sandwiches! I don't recall side dishes though. There is also a pretty nice little wine shop downtown, on a side street right off the main drag. I can't recall the name & online search shows two downtown. Have fun, it is such a lovely area!
OH! You are not that far from Sunburst Trout! Aside from fresh, they also have smoked fish & spreads. You can walk & see the trout swimming. They are just minutes from the Blue Ridge Parkway too! Really nice people & good fish.
