I've looked in the usual places: Williams Sonoma, Sur La Table, Safeway, Bed Bath and Beyond, Target, and a basic Google search.

Where (in San Francisco for bonus points) can I find tiny cookie cutters? I would like to make fondant decorations for cupcakes, but I'm not up to crafting them by hand.

I'm wondering if there are micro cookie cutters that would cut out a flower or butterfly under a centimeter wide.

The closest I found was a set of scalloped biscuit cutters, but the smallest cutter was 1.5 inches in diameter, which would basically cover an entire cupcake.

These are .75 inches, though I don't know if the shapes would work for you.

Butterflies - but doesn't say what size:

I think I have them right here in my pastry drawer. You need a set of Veritas miniature aspic/jelly cutters. I have a 2.5-inch tin with 12 shapes (diamond, club, spade, heart, crescent moon, 5- and 6-point stars, triangle, flower petals and a few questionables) all of which are between 9 and 18mm.Unfortunately the tin is rusted where the name is but it looks like Weyhurnauer Co. Inc. New York 10003. Good luck.

1 centimeter wide is pretty small. I was going to suggest looking at Wilton's mini cutters but a) they'd still be too big for you and b) to my knowledge they're only circles, hearts, or diamond shapes.

For something so small, I'd look in a craft store where they sell those oven-dried molding clays like Sculpey. They often have little punch out tools that might even have a butterfly shape. I don't know if they'll be 1-cm, but I've certainly seen some smaller than 1-inch wide.

Available at Sur La Table:

I've seen them there and thought, "why would anyone want to make a cookie that tiny." Now I learn they're for aspic! Somehow, that makes them even -more- mysterious.

You know those little kits they have at Barnes and Noble near the checkout for building paper airplanes, miniature bonsai kits, etc.? They have one that's either called the Joy of Cookies or the Joy of Cooking (it looks like the usual Joy of Cooking cover) that comes with 4 miniature cooke cutters. I would say they are about 2 cm, maybe. That might be an option if you don't have time to order online or can't find them elsewhere. It comes with a tiny cookbook too!
