Ok, I do not live in a town where you want to eat the food that is on the street. We have hotdog stands and they are only good for one thing...the drunk stumble out of the bars late night.

So, how do I figure out what to eat in NYC? The concept is as foreign to me as Katz's is...so talk is short sentences and please...no large words! :)

This should help:

http://nymag.com/restaurants/features/33526/

It's a pretty comprehensive roundup of street carts in NYC (all boroughs) -- the Arepa Lady (who I hear has been missing for a while?), Sammy's Halal, Hallo Berlin, etc.. The article is even up for a Beard Award this year, IIRC.

If you're interested in any Brooklyn or Queens ones, definitely search on the Outer Boroughs boards.

Note that the feature doesn't cover some of the more recent sweet/pastry trucks:

a lot has been posted on this board about this topic. try searching "street carts" and that could get you started. Or, if you have a specific interest or type of cuisine or location, let us know and we'll recommend specifics. If searching street carts doesn't work, you can also search something unique like "Kwik Meal" which is my personal favorite cart. They have a few locations in midtown but the original is on 45th and 6th. The lamb is fantastic and the chicken is also very good. If you like spicy food, you should ask for extra hot sauce, which is a florescent green color and is amazing.

Also, check www.midtownlunch.com . that site is an authority on the inexpensive midtown meals and has lots of info on various carts.

If you are interested in trying the Vendy winners and nominated carts, there was a thread on that. Here's the link ...
http://www.chowhound.com/topics/446152

There was also a more recent thread on Manhattan street food (excluding taco trucks). Here's the link ...

Hope that helps you.

By the way, DH loves the taco truck on 96th & Broadway but says it's not worth a trip out of your way. I love the Wafels & Dinges truck (mentioned earlier) that is by Fairway on Sundays. But only get the one they freshly make, not the one they reheat. It's great - crisp on the outside and hot and buttery inside.

The one they make on the spot is the Brussels. It's rectangular. The one they reheat is the Liege. It's imported from Europe. It's more oval in shape.

I went to the Dessert Truck today and loved the bread pudding.

I got to the appointed intersection (University and 8th) just as the truck was pulling up a couple of minutes to 6. It opened around 6:15. Closing time is when supplies run out.
