PHX: Happy Birthday to me; where should I eat?

ashlea Apr 14, 2008 01:18 PM

I'm looking for a really good vegetarian meal. My mom will be taking me out and she likes Mexican/ Mexican influenced, so a really good vegetarian Mexican meal would be ideal, but I'm open to anything, really. Any where in the valley is fine. Any price range is fine as well. Thanks in advance.

Although not Mexican, I have heard great things about Green.... however I have yet to eat there myself.

Green is nice, but, very casual. You order at the counter, and they deliver your food to your table. The help is very friendly. The crowd is what I would expect at a vegan restaurant near a university.

Yeah, I've eaten at Green quite a few times. It's an easy choice for me on other days, but I'm looking for something a little more special for this meal.

        Thank you!

I haven't been to Persian Garden Cafe yet, surprisingly, but it's definitely on my mind. Thanks for the recommendation!

I think Barrio Cafe would be a great bet. The menu's not large, so you wouldn't have a ton of choices, but starting out with margaritas and guacamole and ending with the dulce de leche churros would be a fantastic birthday celebration.

          Ditto this rec.

I could make a meal out of those churros alone ...

I've read about those magaritas and that guacamole before and also that the food gets mixed reviews. Those churros sound real good, though, and one day I wil eat them.

            Thanks for the recommendation!

Ashlea, if you choose Barrio Cafe, why don't you call ahead and ask about vegetarian possibilities? The chef/owner is very helpful and accomodating. I hope that you have a great meal! Happy Birthday.

              Thank you!

I think I'd enjoy Barrio Cafe more with friends, considering the margaritas. My mom's not much of a drinker and the marg/guac/churro combo sounds like a fun thing to do with the pals. But I'll eat there one day.

Can’t go wrong with Cowboy Ciao.Start with a couple of the Stetson chopped salads and move on into the Mushroom Pan-fry and their Mediterranean Eggplant.

Yes! We took a vegetarian friend to Cowboy Ciao last year...she happens to be a chocoholic and my husband wanted her to try his favorite chocolate dessert: the Mexican hot chocolate pot de creme. we ordered just as you indicate: vegetarian Stetsons, pan fry, and eggplant(I had never had this before. it was delicious) and finished with the chocolate.

She loved the place! So much she went back another night while she was here for a second vegetarian Stetson Salad. She's coming back to visit next month and has requested we go there again she loved it so much.

And the winner! I think I'm going with this one. I've seen this name in more than one top 5 favorites lists and I don't think I can deny the Mexican hot chocolate pot de creme, and neither can my mom. And the name is clever, so Cowboy Ciao it is.

                Thanks guys!

Doesn't Binkley's in Cave Creek do a 6 course vegetarian meal?
It's not Mex but one of the best restaurants in PHX..

I know I said price wasn't an issue, but I lied! Actually, I don't know how much of a meal my mom would be willing to commit to. I think 6 courses might be pushing it a little with her, as she is not quite as enthusiastic as I am about food. But a 6 course vegetarian meal sounds great to me!
