Very noteable article in today's LA Times in the Southern California Living section by Hilary MacGregor on Mashti M. Lots of color photos and back ground on the two brothers, Mashti and Mehdi Shirvani and how they got into the business and how they make their ice creams. If you go on line to www.latimes.com you have to register, but it's free and easy.

There's a line in the article about stirring the ice chips into the ice-cream by hand. And I had an epiphany. Those slivers of ice are SUPPOSED to be in there! It's not freezer burn! Right?

After lunch at Campanile we stopped at MASHTI's and Kar and I didn't think it was very good. We had the Pistachio rosewater and French Vanilla. Kar jumped out of the car on Hollywood Bl to place the 85 percent remaining ice cream in the trash. On the bright side the brothers(owners) are extremely nice and I'm sure there are lot's of people who love it there. The best Middle eastern Ice cream(Ashta) I've ever had was in Glendale near Colorado- Brand. I like HAN'S in Santa Ana(so rich you'll think Hagen is Ice milk) near SC Plaza or PARADISO GELATO in Newport which I think is better than all of the LA places previously mentioned(I've been to most).

That's a Satelite of the Real Deal. The ACTUAL production(where the machine makes it) of the "Dream Stuff" is across from Bristol Farms two blocks away near Avocado and PCH. Too Good! Today and tomorrow PASTINA has a Macadamian Tart that's a perfect combo with NY Cheesecake, guess where I'm having lunch?

If you have a library card, you can acess the L.A. Times Newsbank via the Los Angeles Public Library site www.lapl.org or directly from http://webcheck.lapl.org/one/latimes_greet.html Just input your library card number and zip code to be taken to a search page.

Just for the heck of it, I searched for "Pinot Bisto" and got quite a few hits. Better than the L.A. Times site which charges for archived articles.

I don't know if it's the same infobank that they have at the Santa Monica and Beverly Hills libraries but I suspect that it is. There are quite a few data bases that can be accessed from the LAPL site, some requiring a library card, others not. Take a look at the left side of the page on http://www.lapl.org/elec_neigh/index.html. Selecting "California Index" will take you to a search page. If you search for "restaurants", you will see photos of some older L.A. dining establishments. Also on that page is a tab for "Menu Collection" which doesn't seem to be working right now. I tried to search for some menus over the weekend but received a message "Unable to access the textbase". I have used it in the past though and I will try to contact them today to see what the problem is. BTW, neither of these requires a library card.

Oops. The better way to see photos in the Electronic Neighborhood is to select "Photo Collection" rather than "California Index" on the left side of http://www.lapl.org/elec_neigh/index.html To view photos of all of the restaurants, simply search for "restaurant". You can, of course, search for a particular restaurant.

Other chow-related links can be accessed from the "Other Local Resources" link. Among them are L.A. Magazine, Downtown News, and L.A. Weekly, all of which have restaurant info. Those sites can also be accessed from their own URL's.

The webmaster at LAPL is right on top of things. Within an hour of my e-mailing to say that I was getting an error message for the Menu Collection, I rec'd a reply that it had been fixed. If you want to see some old menus online, this is the place to do it.
