Ideas for great,mid-range dining in SF?
My husband and I are going to be in SF for 4 nights at the end of the month, and it's our first trip away together in a long time. We're staying at the Hotel Vitale by the Embarcadero, and are looking for some recommendations for places to eat at night. We aren't interested in high-end, glamour restaurants unless they're really fantastic. We're looking for fun, pretty or modern designed smaller places that have excellent food, entrees probably in the $20-$30 range. We love seafood, modern, French, Mediterranean, fusion, anything Asian. Ideally we'd like a couple of suggestions relatively near the hotel, but will also head into other areas for a couple of nights. I've been looking through these boards, and have seen some great suggestions (Piperade, Bar Crudo, Salt House, Slanted Door, Range and Boulevard). I was wondering if anyone had an opinion on any of them, or any other ideas on where we should go...
Have been to Slanted Door a couple if times...it's wonderful. But get a reservation well in advance. Ate at Salt House last trip to SF and enjoyed that as well.
Bar Crudo and Salt House are good choices based on your post. I would also recommend Cav (if you are wine drinkers) Canteen and Perbacco. You might also enjoy one of the Belden Place restaurants - B44, Plouf etc.
Just got back and ate at Tadich Grill. Not modern at all, but solid seafood at reasonable prices. We enjoyed the experience,
On my last trip to SF, Bar Crudo was one of my favorites. For the two of you, order the crudo sampler, some oysters, lobster salad, and a seafood chower to share. So good and so fresh!
I also loved Zuni Cafe. A caesar salad and a whole roasted chicken is plenty for two. And don't forget the espresso granita. It's to die for!
If you like Thai food, Koh Samui & the Monkey in SOMA is reasonable, tasty and fun. I love that they serve tea in an elephant tea pot & tea cups.

Make a res. at both Slanted Door (if none avail, go when they open and eat at the bar) and Boulevard. Both are excellent and you'll save on cab fare. Boulevard is across the street from your hotel and Slanted Door is in Ferry Bldg on Embarcadero about 1 or 2 blocks walk. I have not tried the others but they get great reports, esp. Range.
