where's the best place to get dim sum in l.a.??
Good question. I'm looking forward to what others write.
I've only been to 2 places, Empress Pavillion and ABC Seafood, both in Chinatown.
I liked Empress Pavillion better because of the atmosphere. It seemed better lit, and cleaner. I think largely as a result of the perceived cleanliness, I enjoyed it more.
ABC had more exotic stuff, though (exotic to me, perhaps not so exotic to others). I tried the ducks feet, which were like eating a chicken wing with no meat, just skin. It had a very nice ginger sauce.
Harbor Seafood on Rosemead Blvd in Rosemead, in between the 10 freeway and Valley Blvd.
No carts, order from a menu.
I like this place because it's not as greasy as the other places and they have special dishes that you can only get there.
An oft discussed topic here, so I won't go into any detail. However, Ocean Star and NBC Seafood on Atlantic in Monterey Park, 888 Seafood on Valley Bl. in Rosemead and Empress Pavilion in Chinatown seem to be at the top of the list.
I second Ocean Star in Monterey Park. I used to like Empress Pavillion in Chinatown years ago, but Ocean Star is much newer and the quality is better. Plus Ocean Star really captures that mega-Hong Kong style dim sum ballroom perfectly. You will definitely find it interesting.
