What happened to cheap garlic?

A few years ago, it seemed like garlic prices dropped, so that it was easy to buy for $1-$2 a pound. Now that seems to have disappeared, unless someone wants to buy those nylon-wrapped ones with several huge heads of garlic together. Does anyone have places to still buy it for less?

There is a very cheap fruit and vegetable store called Styles on 52nd Street bet. 8th & 9th, closer to 9th. It's a hole in the wall and you have to be super careful about what you pick up there, but I was there yesterday and saw garlic in packages of 5 or 6 and it was super cheap at 2 for $1.50. But quite honestly I did not like the quality and did not buy any. I never know what I am going to buy when I go since I just pick up the freshest, but I sometimes find that the prices are better than Chinatown and I go there all the time too to shop.

If you're in the Chelsea meatpacking district, I swear by the fruit and vegetable store located in Chelsea Market.

Gilroy-grown Garlic from California) was replaced a few years ago by Chinese-grown garlic, and they have had really bad weather over there. It's a crying shame that we can't even produce our own garlic in the USA anymore, huh? Here's a link:

I'd go anywhere from, say, the mid-50s down to 6th Street, preferably east side. But I'm also in Chinatown a lot, if that helps.

I still find garlic to be pretty cheap, though my price range is $1.89 - $2.79 per pound. Usually I shop at Chelsea Market or Fairway.

I buy it at an out of town Farmer's Mkt.and it's very reasonable.
I think it might be less costly in B'klyn or most likely, the Bronx, but it wouldn't be worth the trip for you
