Upscale Bar...Good food

Looking for a bar like atmosphere but not bar food. If that makes any sense. In other words not looking for hamburgers and fries. Something a little better but in a bar like scene. In the boston area. thanks

  1. Chez Henri bar :) Cubanooooo.

    1. A lot of Boston restaurants have a designated "bar menu", definitely not burgers and fries, or if it is burgers and fries, they tend to be distinctly upscale. A few favorite bar menus:

Chez Henri - outstanding French/Cuban. Love their cubano pressed sandwiches. They were muddling mojitos long before most people had ever heard of them.

Green Street - upscale gussied-up Yankee cooking, with some of the best cocktails in town.

No 9 Park - quite expensive, but worthwhile, again outstanding cocktails.

Eastern Standard - somewhere between French and New England fare, and yet again great cocktails.

Gargoyles - a very playful upscale menu, the burger is always interesting, and usually delicious.

      1. I'm a little confused. Do you want an upscale bar with good food?

Or a bar-bar with good food?

As mentioned above, there are lots of upscale places with fab bar menus.

But if you're going for a Bostony bar that has good food, I'd suggest Matt Murphy's, The Publik House, Intermission, James's Gate, Dogwood Cafe...do a site search.

        1. Looking for something in walking distance or short cab ride from Beacon hill. thanks

The Hill and Harvard Gardens (both on Cambridge St., Beacon Hill) have pretty good food; much better selection and quality than the vast majority of typical bars.

Lucca and Prezza and Tresca all in the North End.

                2. 28 degrees, Tremont Street. Very bar like, great drinks, interesting food, cool vibe.
or, divey-er, B-side lounge, Cambridge, 5 min cab ride, great classic cocktails, upscale bar food, nice neighborhood atmosphere.

I went to The Savant Project last night. Interesting and tasty tapas and entrees. Shared the Greek salad with fried feta cheese. Also enjoyed their veggie spring rolls. The burger was also good - the blue cheese was infused in the burger, instead of on top of the meat. It was gooey goodness. Drinks were also interesting. I thought it rivaled Audubon, which is one of favorites.

                  2. Excelsior on the Garden.

                    1. They've all been mentioned previously, but: James Gate in JP (stay on the bar side or at the very least, stay with the pub menu), Silvertone downtown, Matt Murphy's in Brookline, and the Publick House in Brookline are all great.

I think Blu has one of the best bar menus around.

                      2. I was searching for the these type of recommendations. Any additional entries over the last 6 months? I am particularly interested in such a place where the Sox game would be on as well.

My guess is the Sox game would be on at any of the above recommended places. I second (or third or fourth, in some cases,) :

                          --Sivertone
                          --James Gate
                          --Audobon
                          --Coda

Did anyone mention the Franklin Cafe? Also a good recommendation, though i am not sure if they have a TV....?

                            1. re: avial

I would second Prezza and add Davio's.
