cherries in San Diego?

Any place I can get cherries in San Diego? I found some at Costco a few months ago but nothing since.

Last year in June I was getting delicious cherries at Henry's in Encinitas at a great price.

I have gone to the cherry orchards in Yucaipa/Beaumont...we had a blast. I recall cherries showed up at the Vista farmer's market late May/June. As far as local cherries.... it is tough. We do not get enough chill hours here to ensure a good crop.... maybe in the local mountains.

If you keep watching Henry's they will have them on sale some weeks. You can check out their flyer online.

Usually not until high summer, when they are in season for a brief period of time. Look for them at the Smit Orchards stand at the Hillcrest Farmers Market. They also have them at Trader Joes for a little bit longer. Last year they were very expensive, and I don't expect that will change this year.

Thanks for the tip! The ones I found at Costco were imported from Chile and about $10 for about 3lbs.

Eat local! they will appear at all of the area farmer's markets as Alice points out.

              Are cherries grown locally?

I don't know of any commerical orchards in SD county. When I was a kid I remember my dad taking me out to around the Beaumont/Yucaipa area in Riverside county for a U-pick orchard. They are probably housing developments now.

Doh! I like the U-pick strawberry fields in Carlsbad.
