Morels for 2008

I just received an email from D'Artagnan announcing "Fresh Spring Morels" ($120.99 for 3 .lbs) And I was wondering if anyone was aware of a local source. Russo's does not have them yet and don't know when they expect them.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Whole Foods on Beacon Hill had them for, I believe, 59.99/lb.

ben maleson is a well known source of foraged mushrooms for many restaurants in the boston area; he is based in jp but the only way you can probably reach him is if you know someone in the restaurant business. I'm not sure he has a brick and mortar location.

Small container at Whole Foods in Providence on Sunday was $14.00.
          Not bad.

I got some last week from Bulgaria that were amazing. Right around $40 a pound which is pretty par for the course. I had to get them from one of my supplier friends though. Calling ahead is your best bet if you're looking to get them from Russo or Savenors

I bought some beautiful ones from Plum Produce last night---sautéed them with asparagus and a chopped leek. Delicious!

Don't remember the price, but I'm sure it was up there.

I'll contribute one worry about eastern european mushrooms -- Chernobyl. After the disaster there have been many reports of radioactive mushrooms resulting from Chernobyl, including stories about Bulgarian mushrooms:

I have similarly heard that the Japanese avoid Rhone wines because the Chernobyl fallout cloud passed over that area. A nuclear scientist friend from France told me that the government there is very circumspect regarding fallout from Chernobyl.

Savenor's has them sometimes. I'd call ahead though.

(BTW, got the same email and was drooling.)

You might want to go in the back room at Russo's and ask. Rumor has it the european variety are around for about $30/pound...rumor that is.
