Mortar and Pestle

I bought a marble mortar and pestle last week in Toronto's Chinatown. It was $11.99. I''ve used it few times. I've noticed that there is now a fine white dust coming off the pestle and the bottom of the mortar, which I assume is marble dust. I assume that's a bad thing.

Is my assumption correct?

  1. It's new and this will happen until its "broken in". Try grinding a teaspoon or two of salt for a while, rinse with tap water and try again. Eventually the white dust will go away.
