Ground Grains of Paradise

sugarcube Apr 10, 2008 06:17 PM

Hello!

Alton Brown recommended this spice to preserve the integrity of the apples in his Apple Pie on a recent episode of 'Good Eats'. Since then, I've been trying to find this item, but with no luck so far... does anyone know where I could find it? (i realise my chances are slim in Waterloo, so how about places in Toronto?)
Also, for you fine folks out there who have tasted this spice, could you describe what it is like?

Thanks in advance for your help :)

Spice trader is probably cheaper but if you are nearer to SLM when you are visiting Toronto, the kiosk in the basement that sells the different types of salts also has grains of paradise. they are similar to peppercorns but milder and a bit fruitier in scent. Amanda Hesser, the food critic from NYC, is also bit obsessed with them :)
