Anyone know if Speeds is open today?

Boston Scene Apr 10, 2008 09:07 AM

A shot in the dark, it's about noon on Thursday, the weather is great out and Speed's is defiantly in order. Anyone stop by there today that knows he is defiantly open?

Why does he have to be defiant?

Funny thing about hot dog carts, there are two near where I work that are sporadically open (most likely also due to the weather). A couple of coworkers rave about them, saying how 'cool' it is to walk over and get a dog on a nice day.

Well, I can't wait to drag them over to Newmarket square one day soon.

We need to set up a streaming-live Speed cam on the web!

that would be awesome. and if not a live cam, at least the average waiting time like they have on the Mass. RMV site!

As of 12:45pm today, the cart is there. Speed is not but one of his apprentices is. :noms happily on a Speed's dog for lunch:

Speed is fully retired: still owns the cart, but doesn't work at all anymore.

Thanks to this board, I had my first Speed dog yesterday. I thought I might be disappointed with all the high praise and my high expectations, but it really was a great hot dog -- the apple cider/brown sugar/charcoal grilling were definitely key. The toppings were great (I had it "loaded"). Despite the inconvenient location, I'm sure I'll be back. (Much as I like Formaggio Kitchen's Saturday BBQ, the Speed dog definitely beat the $5 Niman Ranch dog I had a few days ago...)

he was there this afternoon, 4-ish. had my first speed's dog--like another poster, i expected to be underwhelmed on account of the hype, but boy oh boy was i wrong. that was an amazing hot dog, esp. with all the condiments just right. i have to say, it was muuuuch larger than i expected--i thought a supermarket size dog, whereas this one's probably 3x the size or something. when i first got my paws on it i thought i would save half for later, but i pretty much breathed the whole thing down it was so tasty. also, the experience of scarfing down a huge messy delicious hot dog is oddly enhanced by doing so in one of the bleakest looking parts of boston.

          That's what she said.

No, but, seriously Speeds is a worthwhile chowventure, I just wish I didn't work so damn far away.
