Best Soft Serve Ice Cream

We are planning a trip to the SF area and are looking for the best soft serve - any suggestions?

  1. Definitely Sketch on 4th St. in Berkeley. This is not, however, typical soft serve. No custard base, just pure Straus milk. Light and pure in flavor. Impressively smooth for a non-custard/non-cream product.

Was horribly disappointed by the burnt caramel ice cream I tried there today -- so much so, I found it quite literally disgusting and had to toss it away after 2 small bites. A waste to be sure, but not worth the calories.

I agree. We had the burnt caramel and loved that it wasn't overly sweet. The one cup press Bluebottle coffee sucked, however - so weak that even Jack Benny would have made it stronger.

      2. I like Picco in Larkspur, in Marin county.

        1. Old post .. but

I am a Sketch fan if looking for local soft-serve. There may be an occasional glitch, but for the most part ... great.

I'm underwhelmed by Picco and the Strauss stuff.

This is local ... yet ... since the OP probably came and went ... Carvel is still good. I liked the soft-serve at the Red Onion in El Sobrante. Artificial ingrediants be damned. Skip ... skip ... the new Baskin Robbins soft serve

          1. How about in the SF Peninsula Bay Area (South of SFO) for the best soft serve?

KK: If soft serve frozen yogurt is included in your Peninsula quest: I'd include Yumi Yogurt in Redwood City - they are now doing a "plain" flavor but only on Tuesday, Friday and I think Sunday... they have been saying that they'll do it more days of the week but as of last Tuesday, it was still only 3 days a week IIRC. It's my current favorite.

            2. Not soft serve in particular, but my favorite: Bi-Rite Creamery. Don't miss this while you're in SF. Better yet, make it an event: about a block away is the Bi-Rite market. Pick up some picnic food, head over to Dolores Park for lunch. Then get Bi-Rite ice cream for dessert. Enjoy, and enjoy your visit!

              1. I like the vanilla custard at Woody's Yogurt Shop in the Town & Country Shopping Center off Highway 101 in Mill Valley.
