Not soft serve in particular, but my favorite: Bi-Rite Creamery. Don't miss this while you're in SF. Better yet, make it an event: about a block away is the Bi-Rite market. Pick up some picnic food, head over to Dolores Park for lunch. Then get Bi-Rite ice cream for dessert. Enjoy, and enjoy your visit!

re: K K
KK: If soft serve frozen yogurt is included in your Peninsula quest: I'd include Yumi Yogurt in Redwood City - they are now doing a "plain" flavor but only on Tuesday, Friday and I think Sunday... they have been saying that they'll do it more days of the week but as of last Tuesday, it was still only 3 days a week IIRC. It's my current favorite.

Old post .. but
I am a Sketch fan if looking for local soft-serve. There may be an occasional glitch, but for the most part ... great.
I'm underwhelmed by Picco and the Strauss stuff.
This is local ... yet ... since the OP probably came and went ... Carvel is still good. I liked the soft-serve at the Red Onion in El Sobrante. Artificial ingrediants be damned. Skip ... skip ... the new Baskin Robbins soft serve

Definitely Sketch on 4th St. in Berkeley. This is not, however, typical soft serve. No custard base, just pure Straus milk. Light and pure in flavor. Impressively smooth for a non-custard/non-cream product.
