New vegetarian soup at Picante

Picante has a new vegetarian soup. This is very exciting for me as I have looked longingly at the big bowls of rich looking chicken soup on cold nights, but I don't eat meat... It is described as a "vegetable soup with sorrel, hominy and pepitas". It's $6.95.

The soup is a bright green puree, with pieces of hominy peeking out. It is served with a side of lightly dressed greens; I think they were watercress. I didn't notice any pepitas. The soup was flavorful, tangy, and had a variety of textures, especially with the greens mixed in.

I thought it was delicious, and is a welcome addition to their vegetarian menu. It wasn't quite filling enough to be a full meal, but with a taco or some chips and guacamole, it is great.

I know a lot of people on this board don't like Picante, so I'm not trying to start a debate about the merits of the restaurant. I'm just excited about the new menu item!

  1. Thanks for the heads up. I love soups with sorrel. I'll finally get myself over to Picante after all these years.

    1. Being a Picante regular and soup aficionado, I too was excited about this new menu item. I had this soup last week and, although it was interesting, it definately won't be a Picante standard for me. I enjoyed the little refreshing salad of sunflower shoots that it came with. For omnivores, I recommend the heartier Sopa Azteca (chicken tortilla soup), although I wouldn't discourage anyone from trying the green soup.
