Tea at Lady Mendl??

Will have very brief 2 day weekend trip to NYC with 2 daughters (17 & 20) over Mother's Day. Oldest DD has been to city many times and first trip for youngest. This is really more about mother-daughter bonding. Will be doing 2 day trips from Livingston, NJ (visiting relatives), was thinking of booking Mother's Day afternoon tea here for long, leisurely chat with girls. We will be out all day on our feet running around and this sounded like a nice opportunity to relax. Fellow Chowhounders, please weigh in with your opinion. Any other place you would suggest? While we are it, any suggestions on public transportation into NYC from Livingston? Thanks!

Lady Mendl's is the perfect place! Look no further. Since you're coming 'mum's' day w/e, I'd make your reservation straight away. Another place you may wish to consder for Mother's Day is the Merchant Museum House's afternoon tea. This old 19th C Victorian Museum has a special MD's tea service (I'm taking my mom there) that is sure to please! The event includes the traditional tea and museum tour; they also have a lovely garden. Call right away, i.e., today, b/c spaces are limited! A 3rd alt. is the Plaza/Palm Court, as they just reopened. Hope this helps! Also, I'm sure Jersey transit goes from Livington to Penn Station...

Just to add info on the Palm Court - I've not been to eat there (yet) - it is beautiful - prices are $65 and $100 for tea - the latter includes champagne and caviar, I was told.

I've never gone for tea, but I did get married there..it's a great room. There are a few Alice's Tea Cups around as well that may work too.
