Hawaiian restaraunt?

Hello all,

Does anyone know where there's a place to get Hawaiian food in Boston or the surrounding areas? My friend is from Hawaii, and he's been feeling a bit homesick. I'd love to take him to a place where he can taste a bit of home.

Thanks, and happy eats!

Also (apologies for the double reply) if there is a Hawaiian chain which *needs* to expand to Boston, it's Puka Dog (http://www.pukadog.com/)! They'd sell like crazy if you sold 'em from a cart outside Fenway. I don't think the tropical fruit fillings would survive the franchise process, though.

I view it as extremely good news for my general health and waistline that I cannot just buy Loco Moco whenever I'd like in Boston.

You mean Hawaiian plates like rice and meat and mac salad? I would love to find a place like that too!

          YUM!!! Plate Lunch!

No places in Boston that I know of. Closest would be the L&L in NY. This started as a local chain in Hawaii (I'm positive that your friend will know it) and has expanded into the mainland.

Otherwise, you could fry up some sliced Spam, put in on top of sticky white rice (like Jasmine) place a fried egg on top and some Mac salad on the side. Oh My!

it sounds weird, but you may have better luck finding places that carry all of the elements of the dish you want and convincing them to serve them together rather than searching for a Hawaiian restaurant (which Boston sadly lacks). For both a Plate Lunch and a Loco Moco, any well stocked diner should be able to pull it off. If you go in at a quiet time of day and tell them "this is going to sound weird, but I want a burger pattie, served on a bowl of rice, topped with a fried egg, and brown gravy poured over the whole mess" they should have all those elements in easy reach.

Whatever you do, don't order "loco moco" in a Hispanic restaurant, as that means "crazy snot" in Spanish ;)

Well, I don't know any hawaiian restaurants, BUT...

Last time I was at Mei Sum Bakery in Chinatown there was a guy in there ordering up their steamed pork buns. He mentioned that he used to eat something very similar when he lived in Hawaii and these were the closest he has found.

I don't know, maybe that will help.

Hiro at Fugakyu makes a mean Poke.

What kinds of dishes is he specifically missing? I don't think you're going to find things like poi around here. Roast pig and the likes can certainly be found.

And Portuguese bakeries/lunch spots for foods available in Hawaii with Portuguese influence. The Portuguese bakery in Lowell I believe offers Malasadas Saturday and I have posted before when they were available in Cambridge (Brazilian bakeries make some similar, but slightly different).

It was on my list to try Jason Santos' Poke which I think is still on the menu at Gargoyle's.
