Looking for a bar with large lounge space in Scottsdale area

  • 8

I'm trying to throw together a rather last-minute casual event for the Vassar Club of Phoenix. I live down in Gilbert, but most alumnae/i in the area are up in the Scottsdale/Phoenix/Paradise Valley area. I'd prefer to pick a location more central to the majority of the possible attendees, but am not all that familiar with the area. My best guess is that perhaps 15 or so people will show up, so we don't need a huge space, just somewhere with a bar area large enough to accommodate a decent crowd. No need to be seated together. We'll just hang out and mix around.

In summary, looking for:
--Bar, or restaurant with large, comfortable bar space
--Not necessarily happy hour, but good food should be available to order
--I'm thinking N. Scottsdale as a reasonable epicenter, but am open to other suggestions. I don't want to venture down to Tempe, Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa (even though that's far more convenient for me).

Thanks!

  1. Does it matter the day of the week? I ask because a lot of places are packed to the gills on a Fri/Sat night but are much more mingle-friendly on other nights.

With similar circumstances, I've liked The Bungalow. It's part bar, part eatery, causual but nice. It seems designed to be a place you can gather but not eat, or eat if you want, and have some decent fare. Roaring Fork's bar/patio would also seem a good match this time of year.

Bungalow is a nice bar, but the apps are pretty mediocre, sliders and grilled cheese for the most part. I don't recommend it for Vasser alums. :)

Kazimierz Wine bar right behind it is good though, great wine selection and lots of small plates to chose from including flatbreads and lighter fare from Cowboy Ciao's menu next door. Both in Old Scottsdale on Stetson.

Another idea would be AZ88 by Scottsdale Center for the Arts. Big Patio, lots of seating, decent light food and great cocktails

Tapino @ Scottsdale Rd and Shea is a great space for a get together...they are also very accomodating w/ a larger group.

also try Terrior @ Indian Bend and Hayden...they have a private room off to the side....also accomodating w/ a large group.

    2. Uncorked would also be a great place.

      1. Hotel Indigo might be a good fit.

Also agree with Tapino or Uncorked or AZ88.

I love Kazimierz but it's almost always packed and the seating areas are rather small. Logistically it would be hard.

        1. I haven't been there in a while, but Six is great and the food was delicious. I went there for their "Taste" event, which was like their culinary fest. The food was great; sushi, calamari, cheese, and a beef tenderloin sandwich were standouts. I am not sure if these are on their regular menu. Cool place to chill and have a few drinks, but not really an atmosphere for "catching up". Great for mixing around and people watching.

          1. People might pelt me with pits for saying this but Olive and Ivy across the street from Scottsdale Fashion Square is a good option. The food isn't remarkable but it has a lovely and spacious patio area perfect for this weather. For a smaller group I'd recommend Canal across the ditch, er canal. The house specialty drinks are great.
