Bay Cities is the best deli that I know of in LA, certainly on the Westside.

As a student at nearby Santa Monica HS, it was always a treat to go there (we only had 40 min for lunch) and you have to wait in line.

I'd say go with a Godmother with the works with hot peppers...my fav! :)

Also be sure to check out their fine selection of foreign sodas (get Guarana, a Brazilian soda if they have it), and foreign munchies to accompany your lunch.

I'm partial to the Italian "Mille Folie", which are layered sweet pastry type things, that come in about 1" x 4" rectangles, and melt in your mouth.

If you do a search on the site, I'm sure you'll come across many posts about Bay Cities.

Well, it's an Italian deli, which is different. I also like Sorrento in Culver City, because it has a nicer atmosphere, but Bay Cities is probably better quality. My favorite's the sausage sandwich, but most things are good. And my personal favorite foreign goodie is taramosalata, an awesome Greek caviar spread that's like five bucks a pound.

Oh wait, that didn't disuade you? Drat. I'll take a number.....

In all seriousness it's a godsend in Santa Monica and has been for the 20 plus years I've gone there. A search of previous posts here will reveal similar ravings about this place. *The* best place to purchase italian (and other) sundries, as well as the finest sandwiches. While the "godmother" gets rants all around, my soft spot is for the Parma prosciutto sandwich, or even the occasional turkey. I recently moved to Westchester but still make the trip to BC's regularly.... but always before 11:00 a.m. or after 2:00 p.m. Well worth it. The only other place (I've found) that comes close is Mario's in Glendale.

Thanks Ray. I have heard the tales of Westchester's alleged culinary woes.... While I know of a few servicable places to eat down that way, I'm always open to suggestions. Places I know of and love in the gen'l vicinity: the 'original' Shack, Alejo's LAX, Woody's BBQburgers, Paco's (new location?) and Petrelli's (in Culver City) and the Burning Horse (aka buggy whip) [which I have yet to try, btw]....

Anyone having *any* suggestions or recommendations beyond those for the immediate Westchester / LAX area, please start a new thread or email me. (yes I have searched and read the couple of threads pertaining to this area). I think it's time that we of the Santa-Monically-disposessed have some hope in our new digs.

Let them say what they want about 'jet fumes.' I don't even hear them.

Thanks.

I think it's called Tony's. It's been a while since I've been there. It's on the east side of Lincoln, just north of Manchester in the shopping center. It's right next door to Subway, over by the pharmacy and the cleaners.

I think it's only open for lunch (that's the only time I've been there). It's a one-man show. The guy's been there forever, and I love the meatball sandwich. I normally get half, since the full sandwich is pretty big.

Thanks for that list. I left out Pann's didn't I? Haven't been there for a good 25 years or more... Dare I go back, or do I risk ruining my childhood memories?

A few questions:

Philips for bbq. (which one? Leimert Park?)

Lei Aloha for beer. (Where is this place? Decent beer?)

Compari's for pizza. (Help! Can't find it on search).

Buggy Whip for fish. (How is the BW for cocktails?)

Tony's and Maison Wang, I'm sure I'll find somehow.

Thanks.

PS Anyone eaten at the Tandoori Hut down on Pershing, or know of *any* decent Indian food near Westchester area?

I go to the Philip's on Centinela about 1 mile east of La Cienega.

Lei Aloha is on Manchester between Airport and La Cienega. It's behind the Westchester Sports Bar. Quiet local hangout.

Compari's is on Centinela, about 1/4 mile west of La Tijera.

The Buggy Whip is good for cocktails. Nice bar with live piano music.

Tony's (I think that's the name, see other post) is on Lincoln near Manchester.

Maison Wang is just off of Manchester, a block west of La Tijera. It's across the street from Pep Boys, and behind a liquor store.

And I forgot the Korner Deli, on Sepulveda south of La Tijera, across Sepulveda from Ralphs. They have great homemade corned beef hash.
