Restaurant X Brunch Review
Went for brunch this Sunday. Overall I found the menu ambitious and good, though not great and the service decent to poor. It was the first seated brunch I’ve been to and I’m a fan of the style, as buffets typically turn me off. Menu began with fruit, bread, and roasted vegetables (excellent) and an unlimited pouring of champagne, champagne with kir, or mimosas.
Next came a quarter bagel with lox, followed by eggs benedict (not good), ham with Dijon sauce (good), then truffled capon with risotto (capon very good, risotto not so).
This was followed up with creamy pasta with walnuts (good) and mushroom ravioli (over sauced, but decent though I wondered Why 2 pasta courses back to back.
Next chilled shrimp with ricotta schputz (both awful), roast duck with couscous (dry duck, under steamed couscous), garlic shrimp (not great) and something else.
Coconut shrimp (cold and uninspired) was followed by rack of lamb with green beans (green beans very good, lamb, overcooked but tender).
We (4 people ) were bombarded with over 7 desserts from crème brule (very good) to a chocolate bomb (awful), mango sorbet (wonderful) to strawberry shortcake (insipid).
Service was under trained and felt like it was dropping off by course. Many of the servers looked as if they were holding onto their service tongs for the first time…clumsy and unprofessional (my dude watched as one server accidentally dropped a morsel of food on the table, then picked it up and put it on his plate.)
Again, this is probably the best brunch I’ve had (says a lot, doesn’t it) and, minus the flubs, worth the $38 prix fix price and a trip with your mother on a special day.
