fine dining w. veg options??
My grandfather is coming into the city and wants to take me to a very nice dinner. He made a reservation at DB Bistro. However, I'm a vegetarian, and they have 0 vegetarian options on their dinner menu (this is a pet peeve of mine -- in New York City, you can't have just ONE option??? But anyway...). I called and they said they "could accommodate," but often when that happens you end up with a $35 plate of grilled vegetables...plus I feel awkward (I'm not really that comfortable in fancy places to begin with -- it's a little out of my league!).
I'd really prefer to go to a nice place that has even just one vegetarian option on the menu. He is open to suggestions from me, but I'd have to come up with something solid. We have been to Le Bernardin before and I LOVED that, but I think he wants to go somewhere new. Can anyone recommend something to fit this bill?
Location: We're going to theater after, so midtown would be ideal.
(I know, I know -- I could have far worse problems!)
Thanks Chowhounds.

Aquavit (Swedish) in midtown has an excellent vegetarian tasting menu: http://www.aquavit.org/pdf/diningroom...

A place that you would love but it's not really midtown is Blue Hill.
Not only is the food excellent, the ambience down-to-earth and the service friendly, but the chef welcomes vegetarians and will go out of his way to make something special for you, if you leave it in his hands.
At least you might consider trying it when you are not needing to be in Midtown.

I was going to suggest Cafe Boulud, where one of its 4 menus, "Le Potager," is dedicated to vegetarian dishes. That was, until I saw the part where you said you're going to the theater after dinner and would prefer a place in midtown -- which makes sense. C.B. is located on 76th, b/t 5th & Madison, and they don't start serving until 5:45. But in thinking further, if you reserve for 5:45 and tell the maitre d' when you arrive that you have theater tickets and must be out no later than 7:30 (which would give you time to cab down to your theater), I'm sure they could do it.
