Hello to all Madison, Wisconsin-type Chowhounds... I'm going to be visiting the university for four days and I'm wondering where I should eat. I will be carless, so I'm particularly looking for places within walking distance of the university. Cafes or pubs with good breakfast and sandwiches are especially appreciated; I'm also on the lookout for quality Mexican and sushi.

Cheers!

Generally, WYSIWYG. That is, places on State St and points west near the U can be taken at face value - no hidden gems. If you're willing to walk as far as the Capitol Square, Cafe Soleil:

and Marigold:

are good and breakfast-y. Heard good things about Bradbury's, too:

Casa de Lara on State St. is fine Mexican:

Last time I was there they served verduras en escabeche with the typical chips & salsa - a nice touch.

The food carts on the Memorial Library mall (west end of State St.) are fun and cheap, too. Have a good trip!

Thanks - I ate at Casa de Lara tonight and enjoyed it, although the place was incredibly empty. If it's warm tomorrow I might try to walk to Capitol square, but it's been a bit daunting this last little while! There are so many coffeehouses here it's hard to pick just one.

I highly recommend breakfast or lunch at Cafe Soleil - it's worth the walk (which will help burn off some of those calories). The colder it is, the more calories you burn, so have an extra croissant!

Other thoughts: I haven't been to Husnu's for years, but I used to love their chicken with peaches. Himal Chuli gets good reviews for the food, but I hear that the service is bad. And be sure to go to the Student Union or Babcock Hall for ice cream (the heck with the weather).

If for some reason you aren't able to get ice cream from the Student Union (best option!) the Chocolate Shoppe ice cream is very good. It's on State Street.
