Torchy's Taco - Perceptor's Photo Report

  • 7

If this place was in LA and near my work, I would have a frequent diner card.... After 9 tacos and the 10th one is free!!!! :-)

The moment my taxi pulled up to this dirt lot with a trailer and a line of people waiting, I knew this was gonna be damn good tacos.. and it sure was...

Enjoy the photo report:

  1. More awesome pics Perceptor. I do agree that Torchy's queso is my fave in Austin, followed by Taco Deli. Also, the Trailer Park Trashy is too damn good. Mmmm.

I researched ALOT before my trip to Austin to make sure i have the best eating experience in Austin... Chowhound helped ALOT as well

See "Link to PLace" below. In case the beta of this feature doesn't work, it's on S. 1st St. south of Barton Springs Rd.

singlemalt, Torchy's has four locations in Austin, and they have gotten a lot of attention in the last six months or so. In addition to that cart on South 1st, they are at Little Woodrow's on W. 6th (also a cart), and they have two shops that are actually in buildings--on East 6th and Neches, and farther down South 1st St. near Cumberland Rd. Their tacos are a mixed bag, some good, some mediocre, and some terrible. They are also expensive for what you get, and you are faced with long lines and poor/disorganized service to boot. The Democrat is the best taco I've had there (shredded beef barbacoa, deliciously seasoned, with onions, cilantro, and avocado). The Trailer Park taco was terrible, worth throwing in the garbage, really--it's a fried chicken taco, but it was served in a pool of water, so that water actually poured out the end of the taco in a stream when I picked it up, right before the soggy tortillas split and spilled all of the ingredients back into the pool of water in the tray. I have no idea how you could even get that much water into a taco--add shredded lettuce directly from a wash tub with a ladle? This was the "second chance" I was giving them when their new location on So. 1st/Cumberland opened, because I'd had an equally bad experience at their cart on So. 1st, so I don't see myself returning a third time. I appreciate what they are trying to do, but there are much better options available for less money.

        2. your photo reports are wonderful! thank you so much for sharing!

          1. I finally had a chance to try Torchy's in South Austin last Sunday. I sampled the fried avocado and an a la carte breakfast taco (beans, cheese, jalapeño sausage), and neither of them was good enough to finish. However(!) the queso was the absolute best I have ever had! I think I inhaled it. A great mix of trashy comfort velveeta queso and a more respectable one- goat cheese crumblings and excellent spices and the right amount of heat. Very satisfying!
