  1. I'm not from Monterey, so I'm not sure of the restaurant you're referring to.. but as for the best clam chowder I've ever had, there are 2 restaurants: Old Fisherman's Grotto on the pier in Monterey and Chili Not Chili in Pacific Grove. The Grotto always provides samples outside their door by their fresh fish stand.

    1. ed just posted to another Monterey post; his reply includes a link which talks about two good places for chowder....

      1. The place you are looking for is The Grotto. Best clam chowder in Monterey. I haven't been there for a while but they give samples out front and it can be served in a bread bowl.

        1. The Fish Hopper on Cannery Row has a cart outside with chowder samples - pretty good chowder. Their food is also commendable (awesome filet mignon) and their creme brulee is a perfect finishing point. I love the service at this place.

Down the street, the Chart House has an award winning chowder. Very nice decor. The food is alright, and they prepared a perfect seared Ahi dish for me last time I was there. Most incredible dessert - chocolate lava cake, might even be the highlight of my foodie weekend.

By your name, I thought you might be from Fresno, and thought I'd let you know that the Chart House is a chain and there is one in Mammoth Lakes, down your end of the state but to the East. They serve the chocolate lava cake there also.

          2. Alas, the Sierra gets in the way and Mammoth Lakes is a 6 hour drive from Fresno during Winter and when the Tioga Pass opens through Yosemite, it is still a 4 hour haul through God's country. So we are stuck with Monterey... alas.
