Any leads on STL morels?

Glorious morel season is fastly approaching, and I'm already jonesing. Does anyone know of good purveyors of morels in the St. Louis or Metro East areas? I'm too uncertain of my own picking abilities, so I'd be willing to pay for them. Any leads greatly appreciated!

  1. People I know who have discovered morels in St. Louis keep them a closely guarded secret.

    1. I was at Soulard last Saturday and the mushroom guy (NE leg of the market, about 1/3 of the way down the aisle on the south side) had a sign that said "I buy morels". He didn't have any at the time but I got there quite late so you might have more luck earlier in the day. I DID get a couple of punnets of cremini and hedgehogs and, I think, chanterelles (it's been a week, my memory isn't what it used to be) which were quite inexpensive and wonderful (in pasta with chicken and the juice from the Meyer lemon I also got at Soulard that day). I think he's one of the vendors who is only there on Saturday. The guy really knows his mushrooms...he'd probably be a good resource. I have, in the past, bought morels from the vendor in the NW leg, a few stalls up on the north side who also sells all the meat and fish from coolers. I 'd say the farmer's markets are your best bet this time of year. If you are hoping to hunt them, I hope you have better luck than I do. Many have tried to teach me, all have failed. It seems that if I were to fall over and actually hit myself in the face with a mushroom, I STILL would be unable to see it.

      1. There's a little veggie stand right in the middle of Highland, IL that I have seen sell morels. I think it is on 6th street between Laurel and Washington but I can't remember the name for the life of me. My peers and I are having a hard time finding them this year due to the cooler weather at hand.
