Where on the Mall will you be? And what do you and the kids like to eat? My first thought is the cafeteria at the Museum of the American Indian would please any and all, but can get very crowded right at lunch time.
On the north side, Teaism at 8th and D is comfortable with kids for sure (especially if you go downstairs); the courtyard in American Portrait Gallery is really nice and room for kids to move around and play, but I haven't had their food; and if you keep walking up 8th to H and turn left, there's a Five Guys Burgers. And there's lots of other places around there, like Matchbox, which are sit down/waiter service, if that's what you prefer.

Yep. when people report back it seems like they're always happy with Mitsitam, and always act surprised that they actually liked it. I haven't been there in a while either, though.
But the Mall is big, so I'm never sure if they'll actually be near there (it's certainly convenient to Air and Space though). And if it were me, I'd prefer really casual places when I'm being a tourist (like Five Guys), but not everyone feels that way, just because they're with kids.
Oh another thought -- the cafeteria at National Gallery is nice too, with lots of (overpriced) options, and the one in the Nat'l Gallery sculpture garden would be kid friendly, especially on a nice day.

I ate at the Indian Museum cafe a couple of weeks ago, found it nearly awful, frankly. I had been before and had liked it. Part of the problem was that it was absurdly crowded and slow, but that was not all. Had a tamale and goat soup, both of which were nearly cold and bland. Tried a friend's bison chili, which was nearly cold and bland. Maybe I was just there at the exact wrong time, but I am certainly in no hurry to go back. Next time I need lunch on the mall I'll see how the food is at the National Gallery of Art these days.

re: ktmoomau
i was there very recently and it was totally delicious. The wild rice side dish was amazing, as was the smoked squash. But the star of the meal was the baked maple apple. OMG! My sister and i shared it and almost got into a forkfight over the last few bites!! the mexican hot chocolate was good too but almost too rich. Cant wait to return!

Oh my goodness yes!
On the mall itself you have the cafeteria at the Native American Museum, which serves Native American cuisine and is very good, inside the Newseum right off the mall on Constitution and I forget the cross street, but probably like 5th St, it has two places to eat The Source is rather upscale, but the lounge/cafe area has lots of good choices.
You can also walk up to Galleryplace up like 9th St. and not very far up you have Ella's woodfired pizza which is very kid friendly, Clydes again kid friendly, I think their is a California Tortilla which is a co-workers favorite place to go with the grandchildren. There is also a Texas BBQ place called Capitol Q and a Potbelly's and Marvelous Market for sandwiches.

Directly on the Mall inside the American Indian Museum is a surprisingly wonderful cafeteria called Mitsitam.
It tends to get really crowded at peak times so you might want to consider getting there a tad early or closer to 1-1:30PM. The food is really good though and a lot of fun. There are different stations representing the various regions of the US and food like tamales, buffalo burgers, salmon, fry bread etc. If the kids are picky eaters they also have hot dogs, french fries, and chicken tenders...but I really get bummed out when I go there and see a kid eating chicken tenders when there is maple brinned turkey right around the corner. :)
Another option is Le Bon Cafe up on the House side of the Capitol. Cute little cafe with sandwiches, quiche, salads and coffee. Indoor and outdoor seating. It's small but quite good.
