Groceries between BWI and SW Baltimore

I'm picking my mom up at the airport and coming back home to Federal Hill. I need lots of fresh produce and a few staples. Cross Street Market won't cut it, I don't buy produce at Shoppers Food Warehouse, and because it will be rush hour I don't want to deal with Han ah Reum (I-695), Whole Foods (Pratt Street), or Columbia. Any suggestions for a good grocery store -- with reliable produce -- that I can hit? The best I think up is the Superfresh at Route 1 and Montgomery Road, though I have never been there.

  1. That Superfresh is decent--much better than the Shoppers at Southside but it has more of a standard selection as far as the produce dept.

Another option is the new WalMart on Washington Blvd just inside the beltway. I've found it to have a nice produce dept, good selection in the international foods aisle, but pretty disappointing meats/seafood.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a Harris Teeter to go in at the Chesapeake Paperboard site (Key Hwy) in the next year or so.

    1. Food Lion at 7069 Baltimore Annapolis Blvd, Glen Burnie, MD is pretty good. The produce is always fresh. They can sometimes be slow restocking sold out items, but there is usually someone to fetch it from the back if you ask. There's also a farm stand across the street, though I'm not sure it's open yet.

      1. there is the Safeway near the airport (across from Arundel Mills)
I don't frequent very often, but I have gotten some good produce from there.

        1. I don't do Wal-Mart -- I'll try the Food Lion because I'd like to stop at Target anyway. (As long as I'm playing hooky, I may as well make the most of it.) Thanks all!

          1. There is a Giant off the Wilkins Ave exit of the beltway.

I'd not suggest the Giant unless you have no other option. I've been a couple of times and I was not impressed. I would second the Safeway by Arundel Mills, though. It's about a mile from the rental car complex - so not the closest to BWI, but not that far.

But in the wrong direction, making it essentially a two mile detour.

On the other hand, if the OP is heading from the airport to Federal Hill at rush hour, a time-consuming detour first might not be such a bad idea. :-)

            2. The Shopper's Food Warehouse in Pasadena/Glen Burnie has the best produce of all of the grocery stores in that area. Honest. I've been to all of 'em, and Shopper's is my go-to place, even over SuperFresh. (I was as surprised as you when I realized it...)

About 3-4 years ago Shoppers' revamped and started catering to the ethnic people living in the area. In addition to being able to get great fresh staples (fruit, veggies like swiss chard, broccoli rabe, asparagus, their cilantro is beautiful!) you can get tomatillos, cactus, japanese eggplant, lemongrass.....their ginger is fresher than what they have at Han ah Reum. We used to be a dual household household (i.e., one in Glen Burnie and one in Balto city) and I can honestly say that the chard I got at Shopper's last week rivals the chard I used to buy at Whole Paycheck/Harbor East.

This is the Shopper's on Jumper's Hole Road, right off of Rte 2. It's 10 min from BWI.

You might be very pleasantly surprised.

              1. They just opened a huge Super Walmart at the intersection of 174 and 97. I've been in it once and the produce looked pretty darned good. That being said, I shop at the Safeway at Arundel Mills every week - consistently good produce.

                1. Boycott Walmart and try the local supermarket chain, MOM's (My Organic Market) - they have wonderful fresh produce - it is a small sized supermarket. It is at the southeast corner of the intersection of Route 1 and Rt. 175, in the shopping plaza with a Starbucks and Panda buffet. You can hop back on to 175 and catch 95 north back to Baltimore - easy. Plus they carry your groceries to the car! www.myorganicmarket.com
